Cashman And West

Just like Bill Murray, every day must feel like Groundhog Day to Yankee outfielder Brett Gardner. Once again, Gardner finds himself in a fight for a starting job heading into the spring.

Here are the major 2010 position competitions across the American League East.

1. Left Field, NY Yankees- Brett Gardner vs. Randy Winn vs. Somebody Else?

Johnny Damon’s attempt over the weekend to play agent and make nice with the Yanks, laying groundwork for possible July trade deadline deal, still leaves LF as team’s only bit of drama heading into spring. No natural platoon situation with Brett Gardner here as the 36 year-old switch hitter Winn fell apart against lefties last year (.154 in 120 ABs).

2010 Prediction- Gardner Leaves Spring as the Starter, but is Reserve by All-Star Break

With the Yankees in a stiff year-long battle to return to the playoffs, GM Brian Cashman will likely swing deal in July to upgrade the outfield. Johnny Damon may be a soothsayer after all.
