The season ended with the image of Da’Sean Butler writhing in pain, his coach Bob Huggins hovering just above him, consoling his star player. It was a knee injury, and a severe one at that. Butler, the team’s senior leader, would be out the rest of the game, a game his West Virginia Mountaineers lost to eventual National Champion, Duke, in the Final Four. The image was a powerful one. Coach Huggins no doubt knew his team’s chances – which prior to that point had begun to dwindle – were all but over, but he was focused only on one thing: making sure his player was taken care of. Now, it’s back to business for the Mountaineers as they attempt to make it back to the Final Four.
Butler and Smith Graduate, Ebanks enters NBA Draft
Star senior Da’Sean Butler, the third-leading scorer in West Virginia history – behind Jerry West and Rod “Hot Rod” Hundley, leaves the team after a great four year career. Butler was not only a scoring threat game in and game out, but also a vocal leader who inspired his teammates. He will not be easily replaced. Also graduating is Wellington Smith; Smith was a key component to West Virginia’s success, fitting into Bob Huggins’ system perfectly during his senior campaign.
